Act for Children's television organization
Created in 1968 by Peggy Charren (pictured right) and Judy Chalfen in Newton Massachusetts, the Act for Children's Television spurred the creation of Scooby Doo. Upset with the action-oriented nature of children's programming on the Hanna Barbera network, the grassroots organization demanded that the network display better role models. Purportedly, one of these members cited Sherlock Holmes as a viable inspiration, citing his wit, intelligence, and stringent reason as admirable qualities that children should admire.
